Ex Populus is an ambitious game development studio, spearheaded by industry veterans from renowned companies such as Pixar, Ubisoft, Activision, Blizzard, and more. With a remarkable team, the company is currently in the process of developing two highly anticipated games, Final Form and LAMOverse. The company is focused on high-end indie games for PC and console.
Position:
We are looking for a Senior UI Designer to join our team and help us create visually stunning UI designs. As a Senior Designer, you will collaborate iteratively with a team of talented designers, artists, and engineers to concept and design visually appealing UI that meets the goals for player interactions. You will apply the fundamentals of design, layout, and color theory to all aspects of the game to establish a consistent visual style that creates a seamless player experience and enhances it. This role is ideal for a designer who has the ability to work within established UI styles, create stunning icons, and ultimately own the visual identity of our exciting new game in development. In addition, a proven track record of creating and delivering art for video games, and strong organizational and time management skills are essential.
This role reports to the UX Director and collaborates with disciplines across the entire project through all stages of development.

Core Responsibilities and Objectives

  • Create and own visually aesthetic UI assets, including icons with a wide range of aesthetics, while establishing a consistent visual style. This ownership extends from ideation to engineering handoff.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional disciplines to create a compelling visual experience that meets the goals for player interaction.
  • Maintain and improve the UI pipeline, establishing processes, conventions, and style guides. This includes developing and owning fundamental building blocks of the UI, complex UX implementation, pipelines, and standards.
  • Establish the quality bar for your discipline.

Core Traits (Skills, Knowledge, Experience)

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a UI Designer, or UI Artist in the Console/PC games industry.
  • Portfolio demonstrating:
  • Extraordinary visual and user interface design skills.
  • Strong Graphic Design and Layout skills.
  • High quality Iconography and typography.
  • Strong illustration skills, with a diverse range of styles or focus on Sci-fi Fantasy.
  • Expertise with current design software and extensions (Adobe CC, Figma).
  • Solid understanding of UX Design best practices and interaction design fundamentals.
  • Fundamental understanding of Figma Design Systems.
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Empathetic and supportive collaboration across many disciplines and experience levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self sufficient and proactive problem solver, able to deliver finished work on schedule.
  • Effectively present work, communicate ideas and design thinking.
  • Highly empathetic to your team, other groups at the studio and our players.

Bonus Traits

  • Experience in UI motion graphics (Screen transitions, visual indicators to enhance the game’s interactivity).
  • Experience with UI workflows in the Unity game editor and a solid understanding of the game development pipeline, including optimization, localization, and implementation, are essential.

As a fully remote studio, our team is currently spread across North American time zones. To ensure effective collaboration, this role requires the ability to work a standard 8-hour workday, Monday through Friday, with at least 4 hours of that time overlapping with our US/Canada West Coast teams (Pacific Time).
